    Verizon Wireless

The United States’ largest 4G LTE network, Verizon Wireless calls Basking Ridge, New Jersey home and is the joint project of Verizon Communications and Vodaphone. Also offering the most reliable 3G networks, the company’s services are available to more than 250 million people in 419 markets across America. The company has been an innovator in the mobile technology industry, claiming the first wide-area wireless broadband network as well as the first 3G multimedia services. A global name in more than 200 countries throughout the world, the company has more than 96 million retail connections and had a revenue of 70.2 billion in 2011.

Verizon does not just speak highly of itself, customers speak highly of the company as well. More than 4.2 million transactions happen per day between the company and current or potential customers. Nearly 500,000 calls are processed per day and the 90 percent of customers rave about the company’s My Verizon Express Service options. Verizon Wireless has been the recipient of dozens of rewards through the years. In 2012 alone, it was awarded with “Highest Standards of Excellence in Service” by Amerinet Inc. J.D. Power and Associates call the company a “Leader in Customer Care” while PCMag.Com’s readers agree that Verizon Wireless is the “Top Wireless Carrier”.

The company has contracts with several brands and platforms, including Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry, HTC, LG and Samsung. Several different plans are available, including the contracted “Share Everything” plan and the prepaid plan, a great option if you prefer to pay for only what you need.

    Verizon Wireless Phone Plan Review

Often branded as America’s most reliable network, Verizon Wireless has a larger customer base than any other major cell phone carrier in the United States. Verizon phones are known to provide customers with exceptional reliability and uncanny data speeds thanks to its expansive 4G LTE network. Cell phones have evolved rapidly and carriers are gently pushing consumers towards smartphones as more and more money is invested in network infrastructure. When shopping for cell phones, it is important to understand the price plans as well as the phone offerings before making a decision.

    Plans

Verizon has recently made major changes to the available plan offerings. The Share Everything Plan is designed for both individual and family plans. For the individual user, there are two choices. The first is for basic (also known as feature phones) only. For $70 per month, a customer will receive Unlimited Talk and Text as well as 300 MB of data per month. The second option is for basic phones or smartphones. First, the customer is charged a line access charge of either $30 (basic phone) or $40 (smartphone). The customer must than choose the amount of data. This ranges from $50 – $150 per month. For example, a smartphone user will pay $40 for line access and $60 for 2 GBs of data for a total monthly charge of $100.

The family plans work the same way as the individual plans. Each phone is charged a line access charge and share the ‘chunk’ of data that is chosen. For example, three smartphones would cost $120 ($40 x 3) for line access. Average data usage for three phones would dictate at least 6 GB of data for $80. This makes the total cost of the plan $200 per month. This includes unlimited talk, unlimited text, and 6 GB of data shared between the three devices. The plan works well for families and small businesses because the amount of data purchased is flexible depending on the needs of the consumer.

Prepaid Verizon phones are also available. The most popular prepaid option is $50 a month for unlimited talk, text, and web. This price is available for all feature phones. Verizon does offer a few prepaid smartphones as well. The monthly cost for a prepaid smartphone is $80 which includes unlimited talk and text. Data is restricted to 1 GB per month with this plan. Most consumers find that the prices of the prepaid phones themselves tend to be higher than contract phones. While some of the more popular smartphones may be free with a 2 year agreement, a customer will be hard pressed to find a free phone in the prepaid arena.

    Features and Benefits

The Share Everything plan lineup offers customers all the standard features that have come to be expected at no additional charge. These include call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, three-way calling, and voice mail. Since the Share Everything plan includes unlimited minutes and unlimited texting, there is no need for mobile to mobile or night weekend minutes anymore. Information is available by dialing 411 and costs $1.99 per use.

Special features are also available. One of the more popular is the Walkie Talkie service offered for $5 per month. This allows users to communicate instantly. This service requires compatible devices and only works with other Verizon Wireless customers. Another service is Visual Voice Mail. This service allows users to download voice mail and listen to it at a later time. It is only available on smartphones and costs an additional $2.99.

One feature that Verizon offers that sets it apart is the expansive 4G coverage. No other carrier offers more 4G LTE service. In fact, Verizon is expected to complete a complete overlay of 4G onto the existing 3G infrastructure by the end of 2013.

    Phones

Verizon offers many different phones. As with most carriers, Verizon is promoting smartphones over basic phones. The current lineup offers an assortment of free cell phones including the iPhone 4, Pantech Breakout, and Pantech Marauder. In the $50 – $200 range, customers can purchase the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Motorola RAZR M among others. All of the new Apple products are represented including the iPad 3 and iPad Mini. Tablets running the Android platform are also available; specifically the Samsung Galaxy Tab series in both 7″ and 10.1″ sizes. Basic phones are also available although there are not any free cell phones currently available in this category. Prices range from $50 – $150 depending on the exact model chosen. The most popular are the Samsung Brightside and the Samsung Convoy II.

Verizon Wireless also offers mobile broadband options. The ZTE MiFi, commonly known as the JetPack, is available for $50. Plans range from $50 – $70 per month for this portable WiFi hotspot. The JetPack is a popular choice because of its low cost and portability. It can also be integrated into the Share Everything plan and often will save the customer money when incorporated into the plan. Another broadband option is known as HomeFusion. This is an installed device that offers more data at a less expensive cost per GB. The device is $100 and installation (performed by a Verizon technician) is free. Unlike the JetPack, this device is not portable as it is permanently installed in the home or office.

    Help and Support

Verizon Wireless has many options for customer service. Customers can call toll free and usually speak to a representative within a couple of minutes. The call center also offers many automated features such as balance checking, bill payments, and plan changes. Online chat support is also available on Verizon’s website.

The carrier also has a very large network of retail stores and authorized agents throughout the country capable of assisting customers with issues in a retail environment.

    Fees

Verizon Wireless has fees that are equal to or lower than most of its competitors. Early termination fees are $175 for basic phones and $350 for smart phones. Activation fees for new lines are $35 each and there is an upgrade fee of $30 each time a new phone is purchased. There are no roaming charges with Verizon. There are also no overages for talk or text as the new plans are unlimited in both respects. Overages for data are $15 per GB.

Verizon offers a stable and expansive network, reliable and friendly customer service personnel, and very competitive pricing. Currently, Verizon has a market share that is much larger than either of the other two major carriers. Coupled with some enticing free phone offers, Verizon Wireless is worth investigating when it’s time to shop for a new phone.

I have been very happy with our cell phone service with verizon wireless. We are currently looking at upgrading to smartphones with data. Right now we only have standard phones with text and talk. So many options to choose from. Being able to go online and read other peoples reviews on different phones really helps.

Every 2 years they have increased the cost and eliminated old coverages of text messages, therefore, an upgrade is necessary with more cost. That is the only downside that I have experienced with Verizon. I never had a problem with customer support, coverage and dropped calls. My current phone does need upgrading. It freezes up now and does not hold a charge as long.
